Forcep-tailed (?) Antlion

brachynemurus sacken (?)

an adult Myrmeliontidae, probably Brachynemurus, photo © by Michael Plagens

South of Aguila, La Paz Co., Arizona, USA. 18 March 2017. Attracted to uv light.

The immature larval stage of this insect lives in dry, soft sandy soil and is rarely seen and little known. They are predacious and most in the genus move just under the surface leaving curious trails in the sand. Adults probably take some flower nectar but are infrequently seen because they emerge at night and then for only a few weeks. Most kinds of insects have no common name; the name above is made up and not used anywhere except here. Only males have the name-sake apparatus.
