At light, Rackensack Wash, Maricopa Co., Arizona. 11 Aug. 2016. Length of the resting moth is about 12 mm.

Noctuidae -- Owlet Moth Family

This moth looks very peculiar when sitting on a painted wall or in this case, a bed sheet. An ultraviolet light in front of a white sheet is a good way to sample the nocturnal insect fauna. It is when this moth alights on a tree branch or twig that the structure makes sense. The larval stage feeds on various members of the sumac family including poison ivy.
