Brown Garden Snail

Helix aspera
(Cornu asperum)

These snails are fairly common in the irrigated portions of Glendale, Phoenix and Mesa, Arizona.

The Brown Garden Snail is not native to Arizona or the Western Hemisphere. They were introduced from Eurasia with the idea of possibly growing them for escargot (food). In some places their introduction was accidental along with horticultural plants. Upon escape they became numerous and destructive in gardens where they feed on various plant material. Later, the predatory Decolate Snail was introduced to control the Brown Garden Snail. There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly.
