Belted Kingfisher

Megaceryle (Ceryle) alcyon

Photo © by Robert Shantz

This kingfisher was photographed by Robert Shantz at East Fork of Black River; Apache National Forest, Arizona.

Kingfishers can be found diving for small fish wherever there is open water in the Sonoran Desert. Look for them especially along major rivers and streams.

They are mostly absent from the Sonoran Desert during the summer when they head north to breed.

Winter Migrant - Common in winter, rare/absent in summer
