Aspidoscelis sonorae

Sonoran Spotted Whiptail, Aspidoscelis sonorae, © by Michael Plagens taken near the East Verde River n. of Payson, Gila Co., Arizona. July 2010

Observed near Peña Blanca Lake, Sta. Cruz Co. Arizona, USA, July 2010.

Whiptail lizards are also known as race runners due to their extraordinary speed. With speed they capture many prey including smaller lizards and flying insects. Notice the faint spots between the longitudinal stripes. Notice further that these spots are absent from the central dark stripe.
