LEAVES: The stiff, ovate leaves have wavy margins that are also serrate. The leaves can appear crowded on the stems and decrease in size towards top.

RANGE: In Arizona this plant is restricted to moist lower canyons of southeastern Arizona. Ranges into Mexico and New Mexico.

PERENNIAL: Above ground portions are entirely herbaceous but regrow each season with summer rains from a tough root stock. To nearly 2 m tall.

FLOWERS: The florets of the head are all two-lipped and very sweetly fragrant. Highly attractive to a variety of insect pollinators.

PHYLLARIES: The phyllaries are also colored pink from the midpoint; several uneven rows.
