HERBACEOUS PERENNIAL: Several to many white stems rising to about a half meter in height from a perennial root system that is parasitic on adjacent plants.

FLOWERS: Color is provided by bright red bracts (modified leaves) with the actual paler flowers partly enclosed. Another common name is Whole-leaf Paintbrush because the bracts are not divided.

LEAVES: Almost linear leaves are whitish due to a lot of pubescence on the lower surfaces.

RANGE: In lower, sunny portions of woody canyons in Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado and Sonora.

FRUIT: The fruit is a dry, two-valved capsule with many seeds.

UNARMED. Without thorns.

Orobanchaceae -- Broomrape Family
