Found on limestone ledge adjacent to Peppersauce Canyon, Sta Catalina Mts., Arizona, USA. 18 April 2010.

leaf of Desert Larkspur, Delphinium parishii, © by Michael Plagens FLOWERS: Tall, slender wands of blue-purple flowers in mid to late spring. A distinct spur protrudes from the base of the flower which is bilaterally symetric.

LEAVES: The lobes of the leaves can vary in width and in the amount of pubescence. The leaf shown is heavily puberlant.

PERENNIAL: A perennial root survives many seasons. Depending on the winter season's rain the stems will regrow accordingly.

RANGE: On rocky ledges and gentle slopes adjacent to riparian corridors - especially north facing or where there is deep alluvium. Pretty much confined to Arizona, Nevada and southern California.

FRUIT: About five adhering seeds each enclosed in a separate coating and 3x longer than wide.

UNARMED: No spines.
