LEAVES: The lance-shaped leaves are smooth, thick and succulent. They are scattered along upright stems.

RANGE: In Arizona this plant is restricted to lower canyons and slopes of the Sky Island Mountains in the southeast. Ranges into Mexico, New Mexico and Texas.

PERENNIAL: Above ground portions are herbaceous and succulent but there may be a large underground root.

FLOWERS: Bright orange to yellow flowers have five petals, numerous stamens and a three-lobed style.

FRUIT: A spherical capsule.
