LEAVES: Alternate on the stems with bases that partially slasp the stem. Margins usually smooth.

RANGE: In Arizona this plant is restricted to moist lower canyons of southeastern Arizona. Ranges into Mexico and New Mexico.

ANNUAL: Above ground portions are entirely herbaceous with mostly a single, leafy stem up to 150 cm tall.

FLOWERS: The florets of the head are all of the disc type, i.e. tubular with five, radially symetrical petals. However, the disc flowers at the margins of the head are greatly elongated, appearing thread-like.

PHYLLARIES: The bracts forming the involucre are harded and set with rather stiff prickle-like hairs.
