LEAVES: Leaves are palmately or pinnately lobed - lobes more pronounced towards base. A narrow portion of leaf descends down petiole to stem. Stems are slightly squared off..

FLOWERS: Blue to lavender flowers on a spike at top of plant - considerable variation in how elongated this stem is and how closely packed the blooms. Between the flowers are small, leafy bracts.

ANNUAL: Annual with taproot grows up in spring, blooming mid to late spring; 10 to 40 cm.

RANGE: Generally on deeper rocky soils slightly riparian flood zones in partial shade. Ranges acros southern United States with several recognized variaties.

FRUIT: Divides into four nutlet-seeds.
