FLOWERS: Blooms late summer and fall. White disc florets and no ray florets. The five petals of each disc flower are easy to see because they are larger than those of many composites. This specimen has the disc flowers appearing to be tinged brownish due to the colored, exserted stamens. A single series of narrow phyllaries subtend the head.

PERENNIAL: Herbaceous above ground portions regrow from taproot stock for two or more years to a height of 1.5 meters.

LEAVES: Leaves are divided into narrow, linear segments.

RANGE: Spotty distribution in the Sonoran Desert at middle and higher elevations occuring esp. on terraces adjacent to washes.

FRUIT: Mature seeds have a series of short scales at the top.
