In Arizona this medium-sized mammal is known by its Spanish name, Javelina. When not rooting for bulbs and tubers in moist soil along riparian streams these mammals feed with impunity on Engelmann Prickly Pear. Their tough, grooved palate keeps the spines from injuring their mouth.
