Annual Sunflower

The Bordered Patch is a common butterfly along many of the sycamore-lined canyons of Arizona. The caterpillars can be found on Annual Sunflower and a few other composites - plants that are also commonly found in our riparian corridors. The base coloration is velvety black. Patches of white, yellow, orange or almost no color on the upper surface create many different-looking butterflies; two versions are shown below. On the wing from mid spring through autumn.
